Formula 1 driver ratings, 2026
About 93% of the gap between two Formula 1 cars is the machinery. Across this season’s qualifying, barely 7% of the spread in lap time comes down to the driver sitting in it. That 7% is what this site measures — nine independent performance metrics, computed race by race from official timing data, rebuilding the grid by driver merit alone.
∑ Nobody can measure it perfectly: you can never put two drivers in the same car, on the same lap, on the same tyres. What we can do is run algorithms built on years of historical timing data and pull the driver away from the machine as far as the numbers honestly allow. Never a person’s opinion, never a subjective grade.

Machinery explains most of a Formula 1 result. Every DriverIndex metric measures a driver against what their own car should deliver — so a P12 in a backmarker can outrank a podium in a rocket ship.
Nine dimensions
Race pace, qualifying, starts, tyre craft, wheel-to-wheel combat, consistency, pit execution, cleanliness, expected position. Every driver, every race, each dimension graded on its own — the very best drive of the season sets the top of the scale, and the worst sets the bottom.
A parallel championship
The nine scores combine into a single race grade. Drivers are re-ranked by that grade and paid points on the official F1 scale — round after round it becomes the DriverIndex Championship.
